Great article, Grace! Its important to note that education loans typically average about 60 % (or more, depending upon where you are) of the total financial aid available to students.

Also, adults pursuing training through career/vocational schools may not be eligible for typical financial aid. A lot of these schools work strictly with either alternative loans or private pay. If/when financial aid is available, a great deal of the funding will come through loans or targeted programs (veterans benefits, disability benefits).

The key thing adult students need to keep in mind is that the school is generally THE source for information regarding the availability of financial aid or payment options.

While I do agree with most of this post, I think that the school is not necessarily the best source for information when it comes to private scholarships. My school's financial aid office is a great resource, however, I feel that I have found many more scholarships through online searches. With these searches though, it's important to know that you should NOT have to pay for these services. There are many good, free scholarship search sites that can direct you to scholarships that are specifically for adults and returning students.

In response to Financial Aid for Adults posted by etheriel23:Etheriel: You should certainly search out private/corporate/foundational scholarships. Keep in mind, however, that these scholarships are very competitive and generally less than 2 percent of all of the aid provided to student comes from these resources. Thus, when it comes to financial aid, the financial aid office at the school really is THE primary resource for financial aid.

Good luck to you!

I just started back to school 1 1/2 years ago I was scared to death and my financial aid office was a good source for info but my college has another resource too that I was lucky enough to run across, in my school it is called Life Steps. It may be called somethin else at different schools but find out if your school has something like this to help. They don't just help with financial aid they help you with everything, from mentoring to tutoring and so on.
